When Lady Gaga arrived on the entertainment scene, she single-handedly changed the entertainment landscape in a way no artist ever could. She is a performance artist as much as a singer/composer, and is now one of Time Magazine’s fashion icons listed in “All-Time 100 Fashion Icons” under Muse to boot. She’s actually in good company under the Muse list which boasts the likes of truly iconic sex symbols such as French femme fatale Brigitte Bardot, former US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and classic waif Audrey Hepburn!
Notorious for her controversial and very personal lyrics, and total commitment to her brand of creativity, she reveals plainly in a Vanity Fair interview “I’m perpetually lonely. I’m lonely when I’m in relationships. It’s my condition as an artist. I’m drawn to bad romances. And my song [“Bad Romance”] is about whether I go after those [sort of relationships] or if they find me. I’m quite celibate now; I don’t really get time to meet anyone.” And it is, we, her audience, who benefits from her condition as an artist. Lady Gaga is always in performance mode even when walking the streets of her native New York. In the same Vanity Fair interview with contributing editor, Lisa Robinson, she reveals, “I have never felt truly cherished by a lover. I have an inability to know what happiness feels like with a man. I say this honestly, and this is my new thing as of the past year: when I fight with someone I’m in a relationship with, I think, what would my fans think if they knew this was happening? How would they feel about my work and about me as a female if they knew I was allowing this to go on? And then I get out.”
Right or wrong, Lady Gaga considers her love affair with her audience as the only love affair worth keeping, and nurturing. She seduces us with her music, and keeps us enthralled with a varied musical repertoire, at one time lending her voice to a duet with Tony Bennett of “The Lady Is a Tramp.” But it is with her unique outfits when she steps out to face the glare of the entertainment spotlight that she captures our undivided attention. We may never wear what she wears with panache and even audacity, but we will always fasten our eyes on any outfit she dons.
Here are just a few Gaga outfits that have drawn controversy, and even morbid fascination in the course of her career.
